In short
This policy covers the notepadXL application for macOS, distributed on the Mac App Store by Starn (identifier fr.starn.notepadXL). It describes what the app does with the information on your computer. It is written to be read, not endured.
None. notepadXL does not collect, transmit, sell or share any personal data, usage data, diagnostic data, identifier or crash report. The app includes no analytics tool, no advertising SDK and no third-party code that talks to the outside world.
notepadXL makes no network request of its own: no analytics, no update check, no telemetry. The only connections it opens are to the FTP and SFTP servers you add in the files panel, when you browse them, open a file from them or save it back. They go straight from your Mac to that server; nothing passes through us.
notepadXL runs inside the macOS App Sandbox. It can only read and write the files you choose explicitly — in the Open and Save panels, in the folders you add to the files panel, or by dropping them on the window. It cannot browse the rest of your disk.
To reopen your tabs at the next launch, notepadXL keeps a security-scoped bookmark for each file you open: a reference that lets it find the same file again, stored locally and used for nothing else.
For each server you add, notepadXL keeps its address, port, user name and folder in its settings on your Mac, and its password in your macOS keychain, encrypted a second time with a key tied to this Mac, so that a copy of it cannot be read on another computer. When you open a file from a server, a copy is downloaded into notepadXL's own folder so that it can be edited like any other file; saving the tab writes that copy and sends it back to the server. Removing a server deletes its settings, its password and these copies.
Plain FTP is not encrypted: the password and the files travel in clear text over the network. Prefer SFTP, which is encrypted, whenever your server offers it.
notepadXL brings your tabs back after you quit, including text you never saved. To do that, it stores in its own sandboxed folder on your Mac (~/Library/Containers/fr.starn.notepadXL/):
None of this is ever transmitted. Settings ▸ Reset Application Data erases all of it in one step; deleting the app does the same. Your own files on disk are never touched by either.
When you print, notepadXL hands the page to the standard macOS print system, which sends it to the printer you choose or saves it as a PDF where you decide. notepadXL does not keep a copy.
notepadXL includes no third-party SDK or service. Everything it does — reading, searching, highlighting, converting, saving — runs on your own machine with the frameworks built into macOS.
If you obtained notepadXL from the Mac App Store, Apple handles your purchase and may collect information under its own privacy policy. That relationship is between you and Apple; we only receive anonymous, aggregated sales figures that identify no one.
notepadXL is suitable for all ages and collects no data from anyone, including children under 13. There is no account to create, no profile to build and no content to upload.
Regulations such as the GDPR and the CCPA give you the right to access, correct, export or delete the personal data a company holds about you. We hold none, so there is nothing to request, correct or erase. If that ever changed, this page would be updated before the change shipped, and the effective date above would show it.
If notepadXL ever gained a feature that touches data — an optional cloud sync, for example — this policy would be revised to describe exactly what that feature does, with a new effective date, before the version reached the App Store.
Any question about this policy, or about privacy in notepadXL, is welcome at appstore@starn.fr.
